November 10, 2008

Jesse had a fun time at the doctor's this morning. He entertained himself in the waiting room playing with cars, then stood nice and still on the big boy scale and stood up tall for the measuring part. He's 25lbs and 35in (Timothy, Morgan, and Jocelyn were 35in, 35.5in, and 34.5in and 26lbs, 25lbs, and 23lbs respectively) which puts him between 50-75th percentiles for height and 15-20ish for weight. That's about the same spot he's been on the curve since making it onto the curve in the first place – haha.

Apparently Jesse knows the color green because he pointed out all the green crayons on the wallpaper. No other colors, just green. Then he counted the crayons - 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, 10. He was talking up a storm right up until the doctor walked in, at which point he climbed in my lap and buried his head. However, he did everything he was asked - kept his head still to have his ears looked at, said ahhhhh, the whole nine yards. I got to say yes to all the questions except one. It went something like this:

Does he talk in sentences? yes, often paragraphs

Does he eat well including veggies of various colors? yup - asparagus, peppers, mushrooms, you name it

Does he run and jump? you betcha, and climb

Does he help with dressing, washing his hands, brushing his teeth? yes yes yes, "MY DO IT!" is all we hear

Does he sleep well? NO.

I informed the doctor that he's the world's crappiest sleeper. That's his thing. My other kids didn't talk, this one doesn't sleep. Morgan didn't talk, but he could fall asleep on cornmand in a bin of blocks. Jesse has to have the perfect temperature, bedding, and combination of light and dark to even consider sleep. Timothy didn't eat a veggie until he was 5, but man can that kid sleep. Jocelyn is scared of bugs and can't keep her clothes on, but sleep lasts from sun down until sun up. Not Jesse, no way. Ah well. The doctor laughed and said he agreed, every kid has their thing.

The doctor offered Jesse a flu shot but said it was because the CDC recommended it and he didn't really agree and that was all I needed to decline (the flu shot is the last remaining shot with mercury in it, though you can request a mercury free version). Then he said the nurse would be back to prick Jesse's finger for the lead screening. So I showed Jesse what was going to happen - I held one finger out, squeezed it, and poked the top with my finger nail. We did this 6 or 7 times until the nurse came in. Jesse didn't even cry! He flinched a bit with the prick but that was it. Then he stared at the blood coming out like it was the most fascinating thing on the planet. Too funny! Took forever to get enough blood. Then he got his bandaid and 3 stickers for being such a good boy and we said see you next year.
