August 6, 2009

We're having a fantastic vacation!  The weather has been perfect so far - sunny and warm during the day, cool at night.  Jocelyn has one line of pink across her back where I must have missed with the sunscreen and other than that the kids are tanning but not pink - tanning through spf 50!  Actually, I should say that the boys are tanning - Jocelyn is more like me, just neutralizing the white.

Monday we had Grammie, Maurice, Judy & Ron over for lunch.  It's always great to see them for our annual luncheon and catch up on the goings on here in Maine.  I managed to get a group picture without too much harassing of the children. Everyone got to learn first hand exactly how shy and humble Jocelyn is - ummm, not. They also got to witness exactly how much food the little ones can put away at lunchtime - yikes!

Then they left and we swam all afternoon.  The kids have been sleeping well - likely due to actually seeing the sun and getting fresh air.  Only one night Morgan got up at 3am, came downstairs, and turned the light on in our bedroom - what a shock!  But other than that they have generally slept until 7 or so and even let Josh and I sleep later than that.

Tuesday afternoon my parents arrived with italians and chips for dinner.  We did some swimming and then enjoyed some adult time on the porch while J&J stood at the door asking for anything they could think of to be allowed out into the adult seating area.  More swimming and then bedtime.

Wednesday - more swimming!  The water is great here - not even that cold.  Then mom and Jocelyn and I went out for lobsters and stopped at a shop to get Jocelyn a dress, which of course meant we had to get something for Jesse.  I found a tie-dyed rainbow shirt with a big yellow happy face on the front in a size 4, with a matching one in an adult size XXL - so Josh and Jesse now have matching shirts and they look adorable.  Jesse is quite tickled about it.  While at the shop, Grandma held up two 2-piece outfits, one in pink and one in yellow and asked Jocelyn which one she wanted. Jocelyn wanted the pink pants with the yellow top, and didn't understand that that's not the way it works!  So we found just a dress and she picked red.  I bought Josh another shirt and a skirt/top outfit that Jocelyn picked (yellow top with a multicolored skirt of greens and blues).  The outfits at this place are not something you find around us - bright silky colors batiked with various animals/symbols.  They are really cute and I get her a thing or two every year which she happily wears often enough to make it worth the price.  At check out, Jocelyn of course introduced herself, gave her age, introduced me as Rhonda and Grandma as Beverly.  I'm just happy when she doesn't tell people how much I drink.

Then we picked up 8 lobsters and headed back.  We got 2 each for me, Josh, and mom, and then 2 extra just in case kids wanted to try them (at 4.29/lb this year, pretty easy to rationalize buying extra!).  Well it was a good thing because Jocelyn ate a whole lobster by herself!  Timothy ate part of another but decided part way through that it wasn't that good.

Thursday - another beautiful day and more swimming!  My parents left first thing in the morning.  In the afternoon we all took a ride out to Bridgton to go to The Cool Moose - my favorite store here in Maine.  At first, I thought the ride was going to be short lived as I was tempted to grab the wheel and just swerve into a tree.  It went something like this:

Jocelyn - Where are we going?
Jesse - yeah, where are we going?
Jocelyn - are we going back to our real house?
Jesse - are we going back to our real house?
me - we're going for a ride
Jocelyn - no, we're going for a DRIVE
Jesse - no, Mommy said we're going for a RIDE!
Jocelyn - Mommy - is it a ride or a drive?
Jesse - Mommy - is it a ride or a drive?
me - those are the same thing
Jesse - mommy?  Mommy?  MOMMY!
me - WHAT?!
Jesse - I'm thirsty
Jocelyn - I'm thirsty too (we have now been in the car 90 seconds)
me - fine, I brought juice boxes
Jesse - I want to pick my juice box
me - fine, which one (holding up 2 identical pink boxes)
Jesse - ummmmmm
Jocelyn - I want purple
Jesse - I want Jocelyn's

I gave them their juice boxes and it was quite for 30 seconds while they drank them, then came the LOUD and REPEATED announcements that they were done.  As I was wondering what I did with the trash bag, it got oddly quiet.  I didn't want to look back and jinx it.  Finally I risked it.  Yup, Jesse was sound asleep.  The rest of our trip was blissful - he slept through everything and didn't wake up until we were pulling back into the driveway.

So Jocelyn and I went in while the boys waited in the car and we got everyone a Cool Moose t-shirt and a toy.  They have all those cool Melissa and Doug wooden toys. Jocelyn picked the wooden equivalent of paper dolls - wooden dolls on stands with magnetic fronts and lots of outfits and shoes to be dressed with.  It's pretty cool.  For Timothy - a book of paper airplane instructions and paper (thank you Klutz).  For Jesse - a playground ball that looks like a frog.  For Morgan - play money.  At checkout, Jocelyn introduced herself and me, and informed the cashiers that I was clean, she had smelled me.  Then I ran into Reny's (??  never heard of it - but they had swim noodles in the window) and got 4 swim noodles - sturdier than I've seen before and in 4 different colors because let's just say I've been a mom for a while now.

I guess that brings us to now - eating dinner on the porch.  It's about time to go swimming again!
