Well we had a vacation miracle on Saturday - an entire 24 hours without rain! We all got out in the sun and I burned but the kids didn't as I lathered them in SPF 50 that is labeled "very" water resistant. (???). The 24 hours of dry weather has yet to be repeated, but we hold out hope!
Often when I put Jocelyn to bed, I whisper to her that she is my favoritest little girl in the whole world. She asked me once what that meant, and I explained that in the whole big planet with millions of other little girls, there wasn't one that I loved as much as her. Well she has turned this into her own little sentence, and every time she likes something, she says "I love it in the whole world mom, I love it in the whole world!" It's just adorable.
She's said it a thousand times on this vacation, so I dare say she's having a good time. Despite the lack of sun, we have gone swimming daily, and she loves that. Jesse got much more daring tonight and made it in about up to his waist. He and Jocelyn had a nice little game going - she would throw something into the water and he would fetch it. Gave me an impending heart attack the whole time, and I was poised in a Michael Phelps runner's start stance in my beach chair (except, of course, that I was holding a beer - but was totally prepared to throw that to the ground), but he didn't fall down even once.
Grammie and Maurice stopped by for our annual lunch today - and they brought me coupons! Woo hoo! We had a nice lunch and they didn't seem to mind the fact that Jesse looked at them with an evil eye the whole time. He warmed up about 15 seconds after their car drove away, finally shouting "bye!" and waving.
In a sleep update, everyone has finally started sleeping through the night - or at least we're on a one-night streak. Well, that's assuming you consider 5:45am to be morning. A couple days ago Josh put Jesse down for a nap in his pack'n'play and came back downstairs. About 2 minutes later Jesse came downstairs. huh?! So I took him upstairs and put him in the pack'n'play and said "can you get out?" He replied "yes". So I said "show me". And he did! He lifted himself to his waist like you would get out of a pool, then threw one leg over the side and scrambled up onto the bed (which the pack'n'play is next to be the room is too small for it to be anywhere else). Then he shimmied off the bed and looked up with a big smile. Great!
Josh and I have been asleep in our chairs each night around 9pm. Last night I tried desperately to stay up to watch Michael Phelps' (Phelps's?) 2nd swim, but even staying up for the first one (past 10pm) had been a challenge and I didn't make it. Why aren't they replaying the good stuff during the day? I desperately wanted to show Jocelyn some gymnastics today but couldn't find it.
Today after lunch we took a drive up to Bridgeton. I never knew there was stuff there! We found a shop called "The Cool Moose" and I went in and bought everyone t-shirts and myself yoga pants that all say "The Cool Moose" on them. I know, I know, might as well have "tourist" printed on them, but I think they are cute. I took a picture of a restaurant with Ruby in the name and one called The Big Kahuna Cafe. I would have stopped at a bunch more places but we were all together and the kids only last so long, so didn't have a 2nd store in them.
Last night we went out for ice cream around 5pm. On the drive there Jesse and Jocelyn fell asleep and we couldn't wake them up, so Josh stayed in the car with them while I took Morgan and Timothy. We had figured out a couple days earlier that Morgan does, in fact, like ice cream cones (even though he only eats about half a child-sized cone and you have to keep licking around it for him because it melts faster than he eats it). The ice cream place is outside so usually he dances around watching the traffic and coming over from time to time to have his ice cream fixed. When we got there last night there were 2 tables of kids roughly his age. I don't know if that's why, but when Timothy sat down at an empty table, Morgan sat down too. And he stayed sitting the whole time. He didn't flap or make any weird noises or giggle uncontrollably at nothing. I think he almost looked *normal* to the casual observer. So we ate our ice cream quietly and then went home (I got dishes for Jocelyn and Jesse, but they didn't even want them once they got home anyway). Maybe the set up reminded him of the cafeteria at school since other kids were sitting? Don't know but it was very pleasant.
We found the stash of life jackets and I put one on Timothy so he could experiment with jumping off the dock over his head. He worked up to it but finally made it off the end. Turns out not only is he the slowest runner in the world, swimming is also not his sport. With his mask on (which, by the way, must reflect sun because he has quite clear tan lines!!) he easily does somersaults and handstands and jumps forward and swims, but then puts down his feet when he picks up his head. With the life jacket and jumping over his head, he has to kick/paddle without having something to push off of, and he goes so slowly that you wonder if he's actually moving! Oh, there's a big show of kicking and slapping, but very little actual movement. I tried to work with him but even when his form looks perfect, he just doesn't move. It's the weirdest thing!
I guess that's about it from here. Tomorrow is Josh's birthday so we're going to get lobsters again. yum!!
