January 11, 2009

It's cold outside!  We only got a couple inches of snow, but brrrrr, is it cold!

So let's see, what happened this week.

Timothy got his first sports injury Monday night at practice when he jammed his pinky finger.  It plumped up good and turned nice and purple on Tuesday, but in a stroke of free-healthcare-genius, Josh told him to go to the school nurse. She said it was probably sprained but might need an xray if it didn't improve.  She didn't give us a time frame, so *improve* is sort of a judgement call.  We gave him an advil on Tuesday but by Wednesday he said it only hurt when he bent it.  So we told him not to bend it.  Seems mostly better today so Josh took him to his game.

Apparently the other team was quite a bit bigger.  Josh described it as Morgan in 4 years - hulks in training.  Timothy's team got obliterated 28 to 6.  The one proud thing for Josh was that Timothy was finally pushing the envelope on being a bit aggressive.  He was holding his picks and leaning in a bit and really irritating one of the hulks.  Irritating him so much that during non-play time the hulk rushed Timothy at half court and bumped him hard with his shoulder.  Josh said he almost stood up and yelled at the kid, but since we're trying not to be "that" parent (which takes some effort!!), he didn't.  Neither official saw it though, and Timothy brushed it off no big deal.  So once home in the kitchen, Josh taught Timothy how to draw a foul.

School was a bit hit or miss this week.  Monday was a delay which means Jocelyn had no preschool.  Morgan doesn't deal well with delays and was so traumatized with the change in schedule that Josh kept him home.  Wednesday was a snow day.  Thursday night Morgan wasn't feeling well so Josh kept him home on Friday.  So for Josh, a pretty hectic week.

The dress we ordered for Jocelyn's birthday came this week and she of course had to try it on right away.  It's dark blue velour on the top, then pink satin with blue polka dots on the bottom.  It came with a matching dress for her doll (I got it at Kohl's marked down from $48 to $19!).  Now all she can talk about is her birthday.  We ordered princess supplies (just for the 6 of us plus probably Uncle Joey) that she picked out.  So randomly throughout the day she says "I'm ready for my birthday, is it my birthday now?"  I hope her birthday isn't a snow day!

I don't know if I mentioned last week that Jesse has learned to open doors.  What a pain that is!  Now we have to gate his room if we want him to stay there.  Jocelyn has learned to lock her door.  One day this week she was in her room with the door locked and I knocked and said "open up, it's Mommy" and she shouts "NEVER!" and giggles.

We continue to all love our Wii Fit.  Jocelyn can now do the hula hoop (especially funny when she's nekkid) and has a personal best of 174 spins.  Jesse prefers the soccer balls - today he got 1.  Morgan even asked for a turn on the ski slalom today, and while he didn't purposely go through any of the gates, he did have fun skiing down the mountain.  Josh has the new house-high on the ski jump (over 350 yds), Timothy has the high on advanced soccer ball (with 127), and I set a new record on the 10 min hula hoop today (3350 spins).  It really is good fun!

One day this week when Jocelyn had pants and no shirt on, I asked her why she had no shirt and she said because she wanted to look like Mickey Mouse.

question of the week:

This week's question comes to us from Busy in Boise who writes "I'm new to your distribution and I don't get it - why are you writing to me and where do you find the time to write such long emails?"

Well Busy, I'm glad you asked.  I've been writing an email every week since August of 2002.  I print them out and keep them in binders on a shelf in my office.  I wish I had started earlier.  I always thought I would remember everything since it seems so memorable at the time, but I find that I don't.  I go back and read them from time to time and it's like it's happening all over.  I hope some day the kids will want to read them, and see that despite their teenage view of the world, we really did have some fun times.  I send them out to whoever wants them because some people seem to find them entertaining.

As for finding time, I have no secrets.  It's interesting, my dad once said "hey, we all get 24 hours".  As usual, he was mostly right.  I mean, we do all get to choose what to do with our 24 hours, and this is one of the things I choose to do.  But I also work hard (well, work anyway) so that I can spend some of my money buying time.  We pay for lawn care and that buys a nice chunk of time.  I pay extra for shipping so I can save time by shopping online, which is much like buying time (although I always google for promo codes to see if I can get free shipping).  I spend time on coupons so I can save money and use it to buy more time having people clean my gutters.  And so on.

The other thing about time is I save a lot of time not being a perfectionist.  I feel bad for perfectionists - they take forever to get anything done and are often unpleased with it when they do.  If you are born a perfectionist, then I believe you have a marked disadvantage in having enough hours in the day.  I, however, am happy to half-a$$ pretty much anything I do, which goes way faster than doing it right. What's the saying?  Mediocrity - it takes a lot less time and most people won't notice until it's too late.  Yup, that's pretty much my motto.
