I don't care if it is a Hallmark holiday, I love Mother's Day. I love the celebration of Motherhood (the country's 2nd oldest profession right? haha). Maybe it shouldn't take me this day to realize how cute it is that Jesse puts his hands in my mouth while he's nursing (hence having to still swaddle him at night!), but for some reason today it's ever more sweet. Jocelyn's mussed up hair and sticky face are ever more kissable. Morgan's pudgy cheeks and chewed up shirt are ever more squishable. And Timothy's sweet demeanor and "you get anything you want today" attitude are ever more cherishable.
I don't remember Mother's Days when I was younger. I hope we did something nice for my mom. I hope the gumball incident of 1982 was not on that day in May. Instead I like to think it was on a day where we fixed her burnt toast in bed and later helped with the dishes while she pretended to be 4 years old and only like Elisabeth.
I was a little scared of how my day was starting when Josh woke at 7am after 9 hours of sleep complaining of being tired. hmmmm. But I handed him the baby and rolled over to go back to sleep - no need to let his grumpy morning personality ruin my sleep! When I opened my eyes again it was 9am and something was beeping. I went downstairs to see if the house was on fire. "GO AWAY!" shouted my family. hee hee.
I went back up to use the bathroom and brush my teeth. When I came out the kids were parading in (sans Jesse, who was napping) with Josh behind carrying a breakfast tray of cards and a rose and cup of coffee (decaf, of course). A painted trinket box and card from Morgan, an acrostic from Timothy, a personalized card from Jocelyn, and of course one from Josh (who was giving on behalf of Jesse). The one from Josh played music when you open it - Jocelyn thought this was about the greatest invention EVER and played with it all morning.
I had bought a Wii for the family earlier this week and when I came down it was all hooked up and ready for its maiden voyage (I got to do the honors). Several hours and many games of bowling, tennis, and golf later and Josh was complaining that his butt hurt from the bowling - haha. So I put the baby down for his second nap and went out for a run, by myself. I did well! I went 4.11 miles in 56:53. I'm feeling it now! It's rough living at the top of the hill - tough getting home after you're already worn out. I walked in to find Jesse ready to eat again so am feeding him now and then it's off to the bath tub for me.
The weather seems to know it's Mother's Day. Must be about 70 degrees with a nice breeze. Perfect. Just perfect. Like my life.
I hope all the moms out there are reveling in all they have accomplished in raising their children. From the newest moms making it through those first few sleepless months, to the almost midway moms like me enjoying grade school and karate lessons, to the seasoned moms watching their children grow to adults and start families of their own, to the old-pros sitting back to enjoy all the many leaves of the family tree around them. May the sun shine on us all.
