SBS - Small Baby Syndrome
Jesse had his 4 month appt today and weighed in at 10lbs 5oz. That means he's gained an average of only 3oz/week over the last 2 months (vs. rec. min of 4oz/week), and also that he is below the Oth percentile! He's between the lOth and 25th for length (24 in) and 25th and 50th for head circumference (41 1/2cm), so those things are fine.
So the nice thing is, my doctor is not concerned. He says he'd be more concerned if he was growing and then stopped, or if he wasn't growing at all, but since he's just been a slow grower the whole time, maybe that's just how he is. He says Jesse looks bright, alert, and healthy.
I asked if it could be a malabsorption issue and my doctor had me describe Jesse's poo situation (which is every other day, mustard yellow, between runny and creamy consistency) and he said it didn't sound like that was the case because with malabsorption the poo just basically runs out of them all the time (makes sense since they aren't absorbing it ... ). I asked about the spitting up but he said babies spit up. I love my doctor!
My doctor hesitantly said that if I wanted to start solids … but I told him I'd rather wait and he said that was fine too. He knows that we're exclusively breastfeeding and didn't say anything about formula - yay!
On the brighter side, I got to answer yes to all the developmental stuff - always a treat in this family!
Oh, also Jesse started rolling (belly to back) last weekend, which is pretty cute!
